Diagnosing your Eye Condition with an Eye Exam

Here’s why you should never skip out on a routine eye exam again.

It’s important that you are keeping an eye on…well, your eye health. After all, problems that you may brush off or barely notice could get worse without the proper medical attention. If it’s been more than a year since you last visited our optometrist, Dr. Eric Selander, in Athens, TN for an eye exam, here’s why you should stop putting it off.

We Can Detect a Variety of Health Problems

They say the eyes are the window to the soul, but they are also a window into your overall health. More than twenty different health problems can often be spotted in the eye through a routine eye exam. Here are some of the conditions that Dr. Selander may catch during your next routine eye exam:

  • Diabetes
  • Aneurysm
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Thyroid disease
  • Vascular disease

Of course, visiting us once a year for a routine eye exam can also help us catch a wide range of eye problems, as well, including:

  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Strabismus (“crossed eyes”)
  • Refractive errors (e.g. astigmatism)
  • Optic nerve issues
  • Retinal detachment
  • Retinal disease
  • Macular degeneration

If we suspect that you might have any of these problems we may refer you to a specialist or have you schedule an appointment with your general practitioner. If you are dealing with an eye problem such as glaucoma, we may recommend additional testing to map out a treatment plan. Since some eye problems can lead to serious complications, it is important to catch these problems early when they are often treatable.

You’ll Undergo Several Comfortable Tests During Your Visit

We need to check both the health of your eye and your vision, which means that we will perform a variety of tests at your next checkup. These tests may vary depending on whether or not you have glasses or contacts, or if you’ve noticed any vision changes or eye issues. A refraction test, visual acuity test and glaucoma test are fairly standard. We will also go through your medical history and ask you about any issues you may be experiencing. We will also need to check to make sure that your prescription doesn’t require any changes in strength (if you are a contact lens or glasses wearer). Additionally, we will discuss lifestyle habits such as nutrition that will help keep your eyes healthy for life.
